Organic Options

Our organic approach encourages soil biology, which allows beneficial soil microbes to thrive, presents plant nutrients to turf grasses naturally, and minimizes soil disease and pests through balanced soil ecology.

Services

A more conventional approach: Option I
  • Conventional crabgrass prevention; some insect control if needed or required
  • Your choice of synthetic or organic granular fertilizer
  • Fertilizer applications: 1 spring, 1 late summer, 1 fall.
A move away from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides
  • Organic crabgrass prevention (sight specific areas)

Move away from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides:  Option II
  • Organic crabgrass prevention (sight specific areas)
  • Soil aeration if needed (localized areas or yard wide)
  • Over seed with appropriate seed
(where desired; no crabgrass prevention here)
  • Top dress with compost - 1/4" spring and fall
  • Supplemental organic fertilizers/soil amendments per soil analysis
A more comprehensive organic approach to encourage soil biology: Option III
  •  Soil Food Web - soil health/soil analysis, soil biology analysis, and turf health recommendations
  •  Soil treatments based on recommendations
  • Compost top dressing
  • Compost Tea application
  •  Application of other soil food web microbial
            foods and soil enhancers.

Organic Ingredients We Use

At Dave’s Tree and Landscaping Services Inc., we offer a variety of all-natural soil amendments and fertilizers that build soil structure, encourage beneficial microbial populations to flourish in the soil, and support the growth of healthy and vibrant plants.

North Country Organics Granular Fertilizer:
Pro Gro 5-3-4
Despite the relatively low N:P:K analysis of Pro Gro 5-3-4, the combined ingredients in Pro Gro 5-3-4 provide all-natural forms of N, P, and K that support vigorous root growth and increase soil fertility by activating the microbial populations in the soil.  Activating the microbial populations in the soil causes soil microbes to break down and slowly release food resources to plants in forms that plants can easily absorb. In this way, Pro Gro 5-3-4 supports healthy, productive plants of all types. Pro Gro 5-3-4 can be used on any site as a slow-release fertilizer with excellent results and without the risk of burning plants.

Ingredients: Natural Sulfate of Potash, Phosphate Rock, Colloidal Phosphate, Oyster Meal, Kelp meal, Greensand, Natural Sulfate of Potash/Magnesia, Vegetable Protein Meals, Animal Protein Meals, Natural Nitrate of Soda, Compost, and Dried Whey.

Pro Boost 10-0-0:

Like Pro Gro 5-3-4, Pro Boost 10-0-0 contains all-natural ingredients that support and activate indigenous microbial populations in the soil that function to feed plants. The high amount of nitrogen in Pro Boost 10-0-0, made up of 3.5% readily soluble nitrogen and 6.5% slow-release nitrogen, makes Pro Boost 10-0-0 a great fertilizer for turf as it supports the initial greening up of a lawn as well as the maintenance of the lawn over time.

Ingredients: vegetable protein meals (such as alfalfa meal, cocoa meal, cotton seed meal, kelp meal, peanut meal, and soybean meal), animal protein meals (such as blood meal, crab meal, dried whey, feather meal, and fish meal), and natural nitrate of soda that contains 10 percent total nitrogen.

Nature’s Turf 8-1-9: Nature’s Turf 8-1-9 is made with a special combination of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium that supports healthy turf ecosystems. The nitrogen in Nature’s Turf 8-1-9 is derived from three different sources, which each releases its nitrogen molecules at different rates. The combination of different nitrogen sources in Nature’s Turf 8-1-9 allows for nitrogen to be made available to plants consistently throughout the growing season. Because Phosphorous is crucial for seed germination, it is limited in Nature’s Turf 8-1-9 to inhibit weed seed germination and to reduce the need for herbicides. The high amount of potassium in Nature’s Turf 8-1-9 supports the turf’s need to be resistant to heat, cold, drought, and wear as potassium encourages the growth of strong, stress-resistant plants.

Ingredients: Peanut meal, pasteurized poultry litter, feather meal, (natural) nitrate of soda, and (natural) sulfate of potash.

Compost Top Dress: Tyde Brook Farm  Nitrogen: 8.1 lbs/yd^3:

Organic Matter: 21.8%:
Estimated Organic Carbon: 11.8%
Zinc: 4.9 mg/kg
Copper: 1.0 mg/kg
Iron: 2.0 mg/kg

We apply compost from Tyde Brook Farm with our unique compost top dresser machine in 1/8th -1/4th  inch layers over soil dominated by turf, trees, shrubs, or flowering plants.  Applying compost as a top dress to soil is an efficient way to do the following:

·      Increase organic matter in the soil
·      Supply nutrients to plants
·      Improve soil structure
·      Reduce irrigation
·      Reduce thatch
·      Improve the soil surface smoothness
·      Add beneficial microbes to the soil
·      Reduce nutrient losses due to leaching.

Compost should be applied to your soil once or twice a year depending upon the soil and plant needs determined during consultation.  Soils that have been partly sterilized by overuse of pesticides can be reinvigorated in time using locally available compost combined with other options described here.

Liquid Nutrients  Soil Drench: We provide a liquid nutrient soil drench that contains fish hydrolysate, soluble kelp meal, azomite, and humic acid.  These ingredients deliver valuable nutrients, minerals, food resources, and soil builders to the soil where they can easily be utilized by plants and soil microbial populations.

* Solu-Fish TM 2-3-1:  Made from cold-pressed-fish, Solu-Fish TM 2-3-1 contains 17 different amino acids, vitamins, and growth compounds that are beneficial for plant growth and health. ,

*Solu-Kelp TM 0-0-15: Made from the seaweed, Ascophylum  nodosumn, soluble kelp powder contains more than 60 trace elements that benefit plants as well as multiple naturally occurring plant growth hormones that function to support the following: plant growth, plant cell division, root development, and bud initiation.

*Azomite: A naturally mined mineral resource, azomite contains multiple trace minerals including boron, calcium, zinc, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, and nitrogen that are important for plant growth and health.

*Humic Acid: Humic acid is a form of organic matter that is a high-quality food source for beneficial fungi in the soil. Applying humic acid to the soil encourages the growth of beneficial fungi in the soil that function to improve soil quality and plant health.

Advancing Eco-Agriculture AEA

REJUVENATE™

Rejuvenate™ is a blend of carbohydrates, enzyme cofactors, and humic substances. It is used to

stimulate and support microbiology to enhance decomposition of crop residue and improve soil tilth.

Alfalfa Meal:

2.75% Nitrogen

Alfalfa meal adds high quality plant protein to the soil that is easily digested by soil microorganisms and released to plants in the forms of nitrogen that plants can absorb. The woody, fibrous residues from alfalfa that are not readily digested by microorganisms in the soil are left in the soil and function to build soil structure and quality.

Greensand:

Greensand, a naturally occurring iron-potassium silicate (also called glauconite), has the consistency of sand but is able to absorb ten times more moisture, making it an exceptional soil conditioner for pastures, forage fields, lawns, orchards, small fruits, vegetables, and greenhouse potting mixes. Greensand contains potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus plus as many as 30 other trace minerals.
